Charlotte's Web: Chapter 9 - pages 55-66
Did you know that a spider's web is stronger than it looks? Even though it is made from thin delicate strands the web is not easily broken. But it gets torn every day by insects that kick around it. The spider has to rebuild it when it is full of holes. Charlotte loved to do her weaving in the afternoon. Wilbur was watching her weave one afternoon and he wondered if he could spin a web also. So he talked to Charlotte about it and tried to spin a web. He asked Templeton for a piece of string, tied it to his tail and he had Templeton tie the other end of it to the top of the barn. Then off the pile of manure he JUMPED...and landed with a THUMP. He could not spin a web. Charlotte laughed but Wilbur was discouraged. He wondered what he did wrong. He asked Charlotte but she said he didn't do anything wrong but it was a nice try. He tried a couple of times after that but he could not spin a web. Charlotte told him to cheer up because Zuckerman supplies him with 3 meals a day and that he didn't have to worry about trapping food. Wilbur was upset because he felt Charlotte was more clever than he was. But Chrolotte returned to her weaving but the conversation continued between Charlotte and Wilbur. Wilbur brought up the fact that he didn't want to die! Charlotte reassured him again that she would come with a way to save his life. Eventually she made Wilbur chill out and go to sleep. He kept checking trough for food to help him sleep but Charlotte said that his trough is dry and to stay laid down.
