Charlotte's Web: Chapter 10 - pages 66-77

The spider waited and waited for an idea to come to her head. She was determined to keep her promise. Finally, part of an idea came to her head but she couldn't figure it out completely. Fern and Avery were visiting the animals. They played around in the yard and then had blueberry pie. When they were finished they went outside to swing on the rope. After that they Fern went to visit Wilbur again. Avery saw Charlotte's web. As he walked closer he saw the spider and he wanted to capture it. So he took the top of a candy box and a stick and was trying to capture the spider. He put a leg over the pig pen and lost his balance and fell on Wilbur's trough - the trough was covering the rotten egg! The rotten egg busted and it stunk to high heavens. Everyone in the barn was mad about the stench but Wilbur didn't mind it so much since it saved Charlotte's life. Then came Lurvy with Wilbur's meal and he ate and thouroughly enjoyed. He was going to leave half a noodle for Templeton but since Templeton's rotten egg saved Charlotte's life he decided to leave him a whole noodle. That evening Charlotte began weaving that evening while no one was watching. She had an idea and in the morning we will see what came of it.

Charlotte's Web: Chapter 9 - pages 55-66

Did you know that a spider's web is stronger than it looks? Even though it is made from thin delicate strands the web is not easily broken. But it gets torn every day by insects that kick around it. The spider has to rebuild it when it is full of holes. Charlotte loved to do her weaving in the afternoon. Wilbur was watching her weave one afternoon and he wondered if he could spin a web also. So he talked to Charlotte about it and tried to spin a web. He asked Templeton for a piece of string, tied it to his tail and he had Templeton tie the other end of it to the top of the barn. Then off the pile of manure he JUMPED...and landed with a THUMP. He could not spin a web. Charlotte laughed but Wilbur was discouraged. He wondered what he did wrong. He asked Charlotte but she said he didn't do anything wrong but it was a nice try. He tried a couple of times after that but he could not spin a web. Charlotte told him to cheer up because Zuckerman supplies him with 3 meals a day and that he didn't have to worry about trapping food. Wilbur was upset because he felt Charlotte was more clever than he was. But Chrolotte returned to her weaving but the conversation continued between Charlotte and Wilbur. Wilbur brought up the fact that he didn't want to die! Charlotte reassured him again that she would come with a way to save his life. Eventually she made Wilbur chill out and go to sleep. He kept checking trough for food to help him sleep but Charlotte said that his trough is dry and to stay laid down.

Charlotte's Web; Chapter 3

The barn Wilbur went to was very large. It had weird smells and strange objects. But it was peaceful. The animals did not interact with each other. Fern would visit Wilbur almost every single day. Fern enjoyed watching him from outside of the pigpen on an old milking stool. She was not allowed to take Wilbur out of the pen or get into the pen. The animals grew to trust her and love her just as Wilbur did. One day Fern did not come and Wilbur was very sad and bored. Then the goose talked to him and told him that there was one board loose on the pig pen. Wilbur found the loose board and escaped. He enjoyed his time out for a moment until he was spotted by Mrs. Zuckerman. Then Mr. Zuckerman, Lurvey and the cocker spanial cornered him and even with the coaching of the other animals, which confused Wilbur terribly, he could not get free. Mr. Zuckerman had some warm slops and Wilbur decided it was not worth the trouble to be free when he could eat and be comfortable inside the coziness of his pen. When Wilbur was safe and sound back inside eating to his heart's content, he enjoyed the warm compliments of the people saying he would make a good pig. Then he decide he was too young to be free in the world and even though it was early he was ready for bed.

Charlotte's Web: Chapter 2

Fern loved Wilbur more than anything. When she would get home from school the only thing she would do is play with Wilbur. Before he was two weeks old he lived in the kitchen and then out to a woodshed. But when he was two weeks old he had his own house outside underneath an apple tree. Fern was very concerned about Wilbur thinking he may be too cold at night. Wilbur followed Fern out to the road to wait for her bus everyday. Then he stayed in his pen until Fern home. Then he followed her around everywhere. Fern still took Wilbur everywhere and let him ride in a baby carriage to took him wading in the brook with her. When Wilbur was 5 weeks old Mr. Arable was ready to sell Wilbur. It broke Fern's heart when she heard about it. Mrs. Arable suggested the Zuckermans. Once Zuckerman heard the pig was only $6, he immediately said yes. The next morning Wilbur was taken to Zuckerman's barn.
